I always worry if I’m going to fit in because of being in a wheelchair, like it or not, you have a life long difference. But I felt a great connection to the team. It’s a lot of work but we all had fun doing it.

We uncovered some fascinating stories such as that of Billy Walter’s who worked in the British Navy and had a peg leg. We have a volunteer who lost part of his arm. We need to talk about their history and give them their trail through Chatham. We used the help of colleagues and local people to do this.

On Shoulders of Giants

On Shoulders of Giants explored the forgotten voices in Disability History and was created by Chatham’s Disability History Focus Group 2022/2023.

The Disability History Focus Group embarked on a groundbreaking project in November 2022 to delve into the rich tapestry of disability history within the extensive museum collections, buildings, artefacts and people’s individual stories/histories. The group was made up of 10 people from multi-faceted backgrounds and when they came together as a cohesive team, they bought the best out in each other.

This project endeavoured to shed light on the experiences of individuals with all kinds of impairments throughout history and ensure their stories were authentically as possible represented and shared with visitors to the dockyard as well as on its digital platforms.

It’s so interesting, learning about the Dockyard workers, amazing ships and the stories of the people. Finding out there is a residential community which I was not aware of. I have met so many amazing people and lots of dogs too! It has just been fantastic.
